This starts out so well for me! Literally the first couple of chapters, I was all about it. Loved how Sydney schooled the group on the history of the area. Spoiler: I am not an advocate of gentrification so, I thought this book was going to take me on a ride.

I thought wrong. Let me point out all the things that I disliked about this book:

  • Sydney
  • Theo

But all was not lost, I loved the history and research that went into learning about the neighborhood and the people in it. I’m a history nerd so, that part elevated the story for me.

But (and this is a BIG BUT) underground tunnels, dangerous white people, black people disappearing and no one is looking for them… it’s tew much. I knew who the villains were going to be. I knew it was those who are in plain sight. Just getting to the overall climax, however, was very long and arduous. Too many words to say very little.

And again, Sydney and Theo – whyyyy??? Not every woman needs a man to save her. And why did he have to be a white savior?

One-Word Summary: “Nah” – Rosa Parks

[…] deserted? I don’t understand. I feel like the plot of this book should have been similar to When No One is Watching by Alyssa […]

I’m diving back into reading and taking my time to really enjoy each book—soaking up the writing, analyzing the characters, and seeing what makes a story stick (or miss the mark). Right here is where I write honest, no-fluff reviews.
