I figured out the plot early on but there were holes in my thinking; some of which were answered during the story and some were not.
Laurel was a terrible parent! She failed all of her children and allowed her marriage to collapse because she couldn’t find a way to keep it together. She literally favored one child over the other two but yet, did nothing to actually find her missing daughter. I’ve seen people look harder for their dog who ran away out of the yard than she actually looked for her daughter. How didn’t you think to talk to her sister? Ask if anything had been troubling Ellie? Read her diaries? The basics. If the cops are going to do worthless work at least as her mother, you should be turning over every rock you find looking for her.
Paul and his wife were standouts in this story. Paul was patient with Laurel and maintained a great relationship with his other two living children, he was the one who kept them together while Laurel crumbled.
Floyd is a charlatan, if you don’t see it immediately then you’re not paying attention.
Poppy is strange and the adults around her let her get away with way too much. She has inappropriate conversations with adults and interjects in conversations that have nothing to do with her, and she is never reprimanded for it. Her and Floyd’s relationship is weird and screams incestuous at best.
The people required to protect Ellie failed her: her parents, the cops, the community, every one of them.
One-Word Summary: Lackluster
