YES MA’AM MS. RYAN!! Now that’s how you do a love story.
This book took me through every emotion as if I was in a relationship with Yas and Josiah. I loved how honest and raw the feelings were in this book. I loved that these two imperfect adults made a conscious effort to be better versions of themselves; for each other; for their children. AND MOST OF ALL, I loved that they gave each other grace to evolve into their “new” selves. I could go on and on about how refreshing it was to read about a couple we faced their bullshit head-on and evolved as characters with every page but, this is not that.
The thread of grief is so delicately woven through each layer, and each character of this story is powerful. After being dealt some brutal blows, Yasmen struggles to get back into the proverbial boxing ring that is “life”. She struggles to find herself. While Yas is being crushed by the weight of her own thoughts, Josiah is stacking his hypothetical bricks higher and higher around his heart.
I really have nothing bad to say about this book and don’t want to spoil it for anyone. Please just read it.
If I had one piece of criticism it would be, I didn’t like the way Hendrix would sexualize Josiah in the early chapters – like GOWRL, calm down that’s still my (ex) husband! But I was glad to see some growth there and it did not continue. Oh and! Even though Vashti didn’t annoy me, there were a few times when I said OUTLOUD, “Girl, get TF on!”
I’ve read that this book is being transformed into a movie/series for Peacock (I think, look it up for yourself) so I’m interested in seeing how it plays out on screen because I would really love to see every single word, and every single scene; I don’t want anything cut out due to timing or anything added for “drama”.
