Personal Note
From the very first page—the Author’s Note—I knew this book would hit me on a deeply personal level. I could be objective in my review, sure, but before I did that, I needed to acknowledge my own emotional response.
Like Hendrix’s mother and Maverick’s grandfather, my maternal grandmother also suffered from dementia, which later progressed to Alzheimer’s. Eventually, she went home to be with The Lord (a southern church callback). In her Author’s Note, Kennedy Ryan shares that she extensively researched Alzheimer’s, speaking with caregivers and healthcare professionals to portray the reality of this disease with honesty and compassion. Knowing that, I braced myself—I knew this would be a tough one for me.
My mother was my grandmother’s primary caregiver in the final years of her life. In my late twenties, I lived with them for a few years, and even after I moved out, I was always there—helping when I could, taking the weight off my mom’s shoulders when she needed a break. Reading Hendrix and Aunt Geneva’s experiences with Ms. Betty was like reliving those last years with my grandmother. Ryan captures the stark, heartbreaking reality of Alzheimer’s—how it doesn’t just steal from the person suffering but also from the caregivers who have to watch their loved ones slip away, piece by piece, without warning.
For that, I deeply appreciate the care Ryan took in telling this part of Hendrix’s story. The tenderness, the grief, the exhaustion—it was all there, and it was all so real.
But enough about me. That’s not why you’re here…
Synopsis
In Can’t Get Enough, the third installment of Kennedy Ryan’s Skyland series, Hendrix Barry is at the top of her game—literally and figuratively. With a thriving business, phenomenal friends, and a loving family, she’s built a life most people could only dream of. After successfully elevating Soledad’s profile in the lifestyle digital space, she’s now focused on turning a rising model into a bona fide superstar. Romance? Not a priority. From her experience, relationships have a low ROI, and no man has ever managed to keep up with her pace.
Until Maverick Bell.
Tech mogul. Charismatic. Dripping in wealth and influence. From the moment their eyes lock at the summer’s hottest party, Hendrix knows she’s met her match. He sees her in a way no one else ever has—and for the first time, she’s tempted to break her own rules. But Mav is off-limits in ways that matter, and Hendrix has worked too hard to let a distraction derail her.
Because when you’re a woman with big dreams, the line between who you’re destined to be and who you’re destined to be with isn’t just thin—it’s everything. And choosing wrong? That’s a mistake Hendrix can’t afford.
My Final Thoughts
This is what most women dream of. A handsome billionaire to sweep them off their feet and whisk them away.
Kennedy Ryan sure knows how to write a love story!
By all accounts, Hendrix is exactly who I imagine myself becoming when I darken 40’s doorstep—minus the billionaire boyfriend, of course. Confident, driven, childfree by choice, and hellbent on doing whatever the f*ck I want. Hendrix knows who she is, what she wants, and isn’t afraid to do the work to get there. And just when everything in her life seems to be falling into place, Maverick Bell is the one thing she never saw coming.
If life were as perfect as Ryan’s Skyland, there would be a Maverick Bell for every Black woman in the world. Because we deserve men who are kind, thoughtful, and courageous—men who make the women in their lives, both romantically and platonically, feel safe.
From the moment we meet Maverick, he’s poised, steady—a man who knows himself in a world that will swallow you whole if you let it. His conversation with Zere, before the party, is a perfect example of his emotional intelligence. He has no obligation to her anymore, yet he still makes space for her emotions, validating her feelings while holding firm to his own boundaries. He doesn’t placate. He doesn’t say what she wants to hear just to keep the peace. He stands firm on his decision while still honoring what they shared—giving her time to move out, consulting her before selling their Miami home, even though he had no legal or financial obligation to do so. This is what emotional intelligence looks like.
Through these pages, we get a great love story—two people drawn to each other, making space, and being vulnerable in ways that make them uncomfortable. Hendrix isn’t used to wanting to need someone. She doesn’t need Mav in the literal sense—she’s built her empire, excelled in every lane without him. But emotionally? That’s a different story. And Maverick—who could have any woman he wants—is looking for the one who fits. The final piece of the puzzle, the one you don’t find until the very end but has been meant for you all along. That’s Hendrix.
Beyond the romance, we also feel the weight of caregiving. Hendrix struggles with guilt, frustration, and the pain of watching her mother slip away. The body may still be there, but the mind is fading day by day. She’s still grieving her father, coming to terms with Aunt G aging right alongside it all. Ryan doesn’t shy away from the heaviness of this reality, but she balances it so beautifully with Hen and Mav’s love. And Mav showing up for her at the hospital? Tears, I tell you.
Maverick Bell is the ultimate if he wanted to, he would man. And with money and resources at his disposal, he does it all—and then some—for Hendrix. What more could we have wanted from him?
Now, my only sincere critique would be that some of the dialogue felt a bit drawn out and, at times, unrealistic. Some conversations were very wordy and didn’t quite ring true to how people actually talk to each other. It wasn’t a dealbreaker for me, but there were moments where the dialogue took me out of the story just a bit.
That said, romance is one of the most popular genres for a reason, and Kennedy Ryan writes it so well. I don’t have to tell you to read this. You will.
